Where and how to store wine

Where and how do you store these bottles?

When stored properly, wine can last for decades, even centuries, growing in value and quality. The opposite is also true; poor storage can spoil even the world's best wines.

Below you will find some tips to properly store your bottles;

Store wine bottles vertically or horizontally?

For bottles with corks, you should store your wine horizontally (preferably in a wine rack). Holding wine on its side keeps the cork moist, which is crucial for long-term storage, as a dried out cork can cause leakage and premature aging. For bottles with screw caps, there is no need to store these bottles in this way, but keeping all the bottles together is also an efficient way to store your wines as it allows you to use space efficiently and allows you to easily have access.

If you have different sized bottles, it may not be possible to stack them “nicely/simply”. We do have a solution for that that you can use both inside and outside the climate chamber (click here)

Protect wine from light and vibration?

Keep your wine in the dark as much as possible, whether they are stored for months, weeks or days. The aromas and flavors in the wine can be damaged (UV rays from direct sunlight) if you leave the bottles in the sun. Also keep in mind that vibrations can have a negative effect on aging wine

keep wine bottles away from sources of vibration (kitchen appliances, stereo system, etc.). Such vibrations can disrupt the aging process and disturb sediments in the bottle.

Store wine and humidity?

Too high or too low humidity can also affect the maturation of wine.

Too low humidity can cause the cork to dry out, making the wine vulnerable to the effects of oxygen. The other extreme is also possible.

Too much humidity can loosen the labels, making the bottles difficult to display or sell. A humidity of 58 – 72 percent is good..

Store wine and temperature?

Probably the most important factor that can affect the wine is the right temperature. If the temperature is too high or too low, you can be sure it will affect your wine.

To protect your purchase and allow it to mature properly, a temperature of around 12˚C is ideal, but this can also differ per wine. Consult your wine supplier for temperature recommendations on specific wines.

Wine (all wine without any exception) should never be stored below 0°C or above 20°C (to prevent acceleration of the aging process).

It is also very important that the temperature must be kept as stable as possible. Temperature changes can cause the cork to expand and contract (which can cause wine to seep out or even air to seep in).

Can wine in a normal refrigerator being saved?

If you do not have a specific space where you can properly store your wines, it is not preferable to wines in a normal refrigerator to preserve.

Such a device is normally very cold (between 4-6˚C) and also very dry. A basement is of course optimal, but if you have a storage space (without heating), that can also be a place. Please note that your wine will be stored away from other products to prevent cross-contamination due to food odors, for example.

A wine cooler is of course the perfect place for storing wine. You can then set the temperature between 10-14˚C, which then provides the correct humidity.

Cross-contamination is also not actually possible. If this does happen (if the climate cabinet is located near a kitchen or the like), our climate cabinets are equipped with an activated carbon filter (this absorbs stale odors and will therefore not affect the cork/wine). These are easily replaceable and can be ordered here.
